Shockwave at Follan

We are delighted to announce that Shockwave Therapy is now available at Follan.

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive, clinically proven treatment option for many tendon and musculoskeletal conditions.

How it works

Shockwaves are sound waves and these are created in the hand-piece of our machine by a projectile. These sound waves travel through the skin and into the muscle tissue, creating inflammation and micro-trauma on a cellular level that reduces pain, increases blood-flow and kick starts your body's natural healing process.

Shockwave treatment is an innovate new treatment option for many conditions including:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Foot and ankle tendinopathies
  • Heel spurs
  • Jumpers Knee
  • Hip pain (greater trochanteric pain syndrome)
  • Tennis / Golfers elbow
  • Painful shoulder
  • Lumbago
  • Shin splints
  • Calcifications

Frequently Asked Questions:

Who should have shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy is designed for patients who have had pain for several months and aren’t improving.

Does shockwave therapy hurt?

Shockwave therapy is designed to create beneficial micro-trauma to the injured area causing inflammation to the tissue and so the treatment is likely to cause some discomfort or pain at the injury site. Most patients say shockwave treatment feels like small, sharp pulses against your skin.

How much does it cost?
Treatment costs £100 per session.

If you have private medical insurance this treatment may be covered by your policy. Please check with your insurance company. Shockwave at Follan does not liaise with your insurance provider directly, but we will issue you with a detailed receipt for your treatment if requested.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of treatments required will vary depending on your diagnosis and the duration of your symptoms. Based on the research patients require a minimum of three treatment sessions over a period of three weeks as shockwave treatment has a cumulative effect on the injured tissue.

Most patients will require a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 5 sessions

.

How long does it take?
Each appointment will be between 30 and 40 minutes long. The application of the shockwave treatment lasts only around 10 minutes.

Does it work and is there any evidence?
In short – of course! Shockwave therapy is supported and approved by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence). NICE produces evidence-based guidance and advice for health, public health and social care practitioners and has approved shockwave therapy for many tendinopathies. Research into shockwave therapy is ongoing and growing by around 300 papers every year, leading to frequent new findings.
